A New Era for Workers: More Jobs, Higher Wages, and Greater Rights
“An additional 1.3 million people are employed thanks to Mexico’s new era for workers,” President Claudia Sheinbaum noted. Mexico now has 60.7 million people in the workforce; the minimum wage has risen by 154%; and the transition to a 40-hour workweek is moving forward without reducing wages or benefits.
More Rights and Opportunities for the People
The Fourth Transformation (4T) is expanding rights: 199,000 digital platform workers now have social security and healthcare coverage, and 1.7 million have protection against risks. In addition, the employment certificate will protect 200,000 agricultural workers and the “Youth Building the Future” program has already benefited 3.6 million young people.
The 4T Restored Rights and Sovereignty
Sheinbaum stated that since 2018, with the election of the first 4T administration, Mexico has been undergoing a new period of constitutional reforms. The nature of Pemex and CFE as state-owned enterprises has been strengthened, and pensions/stipends for senior citizens, the Wellbeing Programs, and housing have been constitutionally enshrined as rights, along with wage recovery.
Ayotzinapa: The investigation remains open
“New mechanisms, new investigative methodologies,” the President explained regarding the lines of inquiry analyzing phone communications from the night the 43 teacher-training students were forcibly disappeared. Sheinbaum clarified that “nothing will be disclosed that has not already been disclosed to their family members.”
Mexico Calls for a Stronger UN
“The United Nations has been conspicuously absent in response to the current international situation,” the President noted, referring to conflicts such as Gaza, Ukraine, and Iran. She called for a more active UN in promoting global peace, human rights, multilateralism, and equality among nations.
