Work is underway on 802 km of highways, 4,554 km of rural roads, with 50 billion pesos (US$2.91 billion) being invested for maintenance. In relation to past highway bailouts, President Claudia Sheinbaum explained that today, with privately funded projects, “they bear the risk, not the people of Mexico.”
Mexico Demands Shared Responsibility in the Fight Against Drugs
In response to accusations from Washington, Sheinbaum called for reviewing issues such as drug use, distribution, money laundering, and arms trafficking in the United States as well. “I would like to hear or see a report on what the U.S. government is doing and the results there,” she said
Sovereignty: Cooperation, Yes; Intervention, No
Sheinbaum rejected an alleged, unsourced poll in which Mexicans allegedly favor U.S. intervention and cited a survey in which nearly 90% of respondents disagreed. The President reiterated that “any pretext for interference or intervention must be rejected, because it violates sovereignty and independence.”
Mexican Handicrafts: Identity and Pride
The President highlighted the value of wearing, using, and recognizing Mexican handicrafts, as well as the revival of the National Fund for the Promotion of Arts and Crafts (Fonart). “There is nothing more beautiful than this; it is our identity, and we must take pride in it,” she declared.
Memory to Defend Our Identity
In explaining her speeches on September 15, the night before Independence Day, Sheinbaum emphasized that today we name and recognize heroines in contrast to past attempts to downplay such historical figures. “If you don’t recognize your heroes or your heroines, you have no memory. And a people without memory is a people without a compass,” she said.
