SUMMARY – MORNING PRESIDENTIAL PRESS CONFERENCE – WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 18, 2023

HIghlights of this morning's presidential press conference: AMLO clarifies elimination of judiciary trusts; Region's heads of state to meet in Palenque, Chiapas to discuss migration; President pleased that free textbooks are being distributed in Chihuahua; Grupo Mexico wishes to discuss disputes with government; Maya train and airports to remain under the control of the armed forces as protective measure against potential future privatization

President Andrés Manuel López Obrador considered the protests to defend the Judicial Branch trusts to be regrettable. He charged that a judicial branch employee earns, on average, 16,000 pesos per month (US$874), while a Supreme Court justice receives 700,000 pesos (US$38,270). The President proposed that of the 15 billion pesos (US$820 million) from the cancelled judiciary trusts, 400 million pesos (US$21.86 million) be given to each state and that the people decide how to spend the funds.

The Chief Executive confirmed the attendance of the presidents of Cuba, Colombia, Honduras, Venezuela, Haiti, Ecuador, and Guatemala at the «Meeting for a Fraternal Neighborhood with Wellbeing «, this coming Sunday in Palenque, Chiapas. The President emphasized that the migratory issue will be solved by attending to its root causes, and therefore he called on countries with economic possibilities to do so to help.

The President expressed his relief that the promoters of injunctions against the delivery of free textbooks in Chihuahua have desisted from their course of action. He recognized the teachers of the state for their determination in this struggle, which has achieved the distribution of these educational materials.

President López Obrador reported that Grupo México expressed its interest in addressing, among other issues, the problem of the contamination of the Sonora River and proposed beginning negotiations. The President indicated that there are conditions for dialogue and the development of an integral plan that will protect the area population’s health.

The President said that next Tuesday he will be vaccinated against influenza and COVID-19, with the Abdala or Sputnik vaccines, both of which he considers to be good. He urged the population to get vaccinated for the upcoming winter season.

President López Obrador said there would be no problem in having a woman in command of the Armed Forces. He indicated that the Maya Train and the airports will remain under their custody to prevent them from being privatized, as he feels that it is more difficult to take control away from the Navy and the Army than from the National Fund for Tourism Development (FONATUR).
