President Andrés Manuel López Obrador reiterated his proposal to eliminate the autonomous government institutions at the service of the oligarchy via a constitutional reform. «This structure must be dismantled, because what’s incredible is that we are paying for their institutions out of the public budget,» he said.
Faced with the closure of some border crossings by U.S. authorities due to high migratory flows, President López Obrador expressed his hope that soon the operation of bridges and international crossings will be normalized. He reiterated the urgency of addressing migration with programs to address the causes that motivate people to leave their country of origin.
The President made a respectful call to Guatemalan government institutions to respect the will of the people who elected Bernardo Arévalo as their new president. «Because of a situation of resistance to change […] they are putting obstacles in the way» of Arélavo taking office, he pointed out.
Minister of Security and Citizen Protection Rosa Icela Rodríguez reported that in November 2023 federal crimes decreased 29.8% compared to December 2018. Homicides decreased 23.5%, in relation to the historical record registered in July 2018.
