SUMMARY – MORNING PRESIDENTIAL PRESS CONFERENCE – THURSDAY, FEBRUARY 1, 2024

President Andrés Manuel López Obrador criticized the ruling of the Second Chamber of the Supreme Court (SCJN), which yesterday declared unconstitutional the Electricity Industry Law, designed to strengthened the Federal Electricity Commission (CFE). He said that this decision demonstrates that the Judicial Branch has been is at the beck and call of private interests, and shows the urgency of having judges and justices elected by the people.

Among the bills to be proposed by President López Obrador on February 5, will be a measure that seeks to nullify the Energy Reform of the Enrique Peña Nieto presidential administration, in order to return the Constitutional provisions in this regard as President López Mateos left them. Another bill will allow the State to resume its right to use freight train tracks for passenger services.

Canadian Pacific Kansas has made a proposal to offer passenger service on the Mexico-Queretaro route, with the possibility of extending it to Monterrey and Nuevo Laredo. The company will deliver a study by the end of May.

President López Obrador demanded that the US Government apologize for the DEA’s accusations regarding alleged drug traffic financing of his 2006 presidential campaign.

The President criticized the ruling by judges that set lawyer Juan Collado, who defended former President Carlos Salinas de Gortari, free. He announced that the Federal Attorney General’s Office will appeal the decision.

The Mexican government has invested 80 billion pesos (US$4.67 billion) to improve the salaries of teachers, granting record increases in wages and benefits. In addition, 945,332 job positions have been formalized. The Basic Education Curriculum, which was implemented in the 2023-2024 school year, provides teachers with professional autonomy. It has a humanistic and scientific approach and promotes inclusive education.
