SUMMARY – MORNING PRESIDENTIAL PRESS CONFERENCE – MONDAY, APRIL 22, 2024

Highlights of this morning’s presidential press conference include: AMLO said that the incident involving Morena presidential candidate Claudia Sheinbaum, who was intercepted by hooded men during her tour of Chiapas, was staged. The President raised questions as to why Latinus, widely perceived as linked to the opposition, was the only media present when the men stopped Sheinbaum’s vehicle; Minister of Foreign Relations Alicia Bárcena reported that only 227,112 Mexicans, out of the 1,585,278 living abroad who have voter ID cards, registered to cast ballots in 2024. The National Electoral Institute (INE) is investigating the status of thousands of applicants whose request is pending; the Ministry of Foreign Affairs is working on a safe-conduct pass for former Ecuadorian Vice President Jorge Glas so he can travel to Mexico and remain in the country as an asylum seeker; the President confirmed the arrest of Abraham Oseguera Cervantes, alias "Don Rodo", brother of Nemesio Oseguera, alias "El Mencho", leader of the New Generation-Jalisco Cartel.

The President raised questions as to why Latinus, widely perceived as linked to the opposition, was the only media present when the men stopped the presidential candidate’s vehicle.

Minister of Foreign Relations Alicia Bárcena reported that only 227,112 Mexicans, out of the 1,585,278 living abroad who have voter ID cards, registered to cast ballots in 2024 (23% by mail, 70% electronically, and 7% in person). In the United States there will be 20 polling stations, with three others in Canada, Spain, and France. Of the almost 40,000 requests to vote under review, 20,964 will be added to the voter registration list, while 18,760 must request a clarification of their status with the National Electoral Institute (INE) before May 5.

The Mexican Government confirmed that the Ministry of Foreign Affairs did receive the letter sent by former Ecuadorian Vice President Jorge Glas, requesting assistance in response to the political persecution he is experiencing. Currently, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs is working on a safe-conduct pass for Glas to be able to travel to Mexico and remain in the country as an asylum seeker.

The President confirmed the arrest of Abraham Oseguera Cervantes, alias «Don Rodo», brother of Nemesio Oseguera, alias «El Mencho», leader of the New Generation-Jalisco Cartel.
