THE PEOPLE’S MAÑANERA — MORNING PRESIDENTIAL PRESS CONFERENCE — WEDNESDAY, AUGUST 5, 2026

SUMMARY

Mexico organizes to plant life
President Claudia Sheinbaum called for “setting aside one day a year when we all engage in reforesting,” in presenting the National Reforestation Day. On August 9, about 235,000 people will plant 6.6 million trees and plants across the country, with the goal of reforesting and conserving 1.5 billion plants and trees by 2030.

The President highlighted progress in the housing program. “It is changing the reality of many families,” Governor Mauricio Kuri acknowledged. Querétaro has 16,740 homes under construction, and nationwide more than 33,000 homes have already been assigned. In addition, 14 new housing developments will be inaugurated in August.

INE budget is excessive
Sheinbaum called the National Electoral Institute’s (INE) request for an additional 15 billion pesos (US$860 million) for the 2027 elections “excessive”. “It should cost practically the same as the 2024 election, considering only inflation (as a factor),” the President said, noting that the 2024 elections were actually more expensive because they included both the presidential and legislative races.

Audience rights: more rights for citizens
The President explained that the new guidelines strengthen audience rights and the right of reply. “All they stipulate is (that the media must) issue their code of ethics, appoint their audience ombudsman, and set up a mechanism so that viewers and listeners can file complaints,” she explained. The proposal remains under public consultation so that comments can be incorporated in the final version.

Sheinbaum exposes the righ-wing’s contradiction

The President recalled that opposition aligned journalist and political analyst Sergio Sarmiento said 26 years ago, and still says today, that “the media deliberately lies” and that legislation should exist for defense against defamation. “And what does that mean? Audience rights,” Sheinbaum said in reply, pointing out the contradiction of those who now charge censorship in relation to a proposal that they themselves defended decades ago.

The morning press conference informs the people transparently
The President reaffirmed that the morning press conference guarantees the right to information and responds to misinformation with facts. Sheinbaum noted that official advertising is now distributed using objective criteria, with spending equal to one-third of what was allocated during Peña Nieto administration, with public and state media being prioritized.
