SUMMARY – MORNING PRESIDENTIAL PRESS CONFERENCE – WEDNESDAY, AUGUST 14, 2024

President Andrés Manuel López Obrador will send a letter to his US counterpart, Joe Biden, to express his disagreement with Washington’s financing of Mexicans Against Corruption and Impunity, an association headed by opposition figure Claudio X. González, which is used to attack the federal government. «We feel that the U.S. government is openly interfering in matters that only correspond to our country’s sovereignty», the President explained.

The head of the Financial Intelligence Unit, Pablo Gómez, presented a report on the income of Mexicans Against Corruption and Impunity. Between 2016 and 2023 this civic association has received income of almost 502 million pesos (US$26.62 million). Some sources of these donations were:

-From U.S. sources: 13.01 million pesos (US$690,000) (2017-2023).

-From the U.S. embassy: 96.74 million pesos (US$5.13 million) (2018-2024)

-From foreign accounts: 2.04 million pesos (US$108,000) (2017-2020)

-From legally established entities in Mexico: 299.03 million pesos (US$15.90 million)(2016-2023).

The Mexican Government is considering reforms to the country’s fiscal laws to prevent tax deductible donations to organizations that carry out campaigns against the interests of the majority of the population. When there are deductions, these resources do not reach the Treasury, which in turn prevents them from being invested in the country’s development.

In response to the warning from Federal Judiciary employees that they will go on strike to oppose the judicial reform, President López Obrador said that they are within their rights to do so, however, he asked them to attend to the cases of tax debtors that have been put on the back burner and represent more than 35 billion pesos (US$1.85 billion), resources that can be used for the benefit of the people.
