SUMMARY – MORNING PRESIDENTIAL PRESS CONFERENCE – FRIDAY, JANUARY 26, 2024

President Andrés Manuel López Obrador announced that one of the constitutional reform bills that he will present on February 5 will seek to prohibit the consumption of chemical drugs, such as fentanyl, and the use of vapes. In this context, he reiterated that Mexico will support the US government in the fight against drugs. “This has a humanitarian connotation, it has nothing to do with the political, ideological issue,” he stressed.

The head of the Executive Branch urged the next presidential administration to continue wagering on energy self-sufficiency. He recalled that during the neoliberal period no refinery was built because the government preferred to sell crude oil and buy gasoline. This is in contrast to the new policy which seeks to produce gasoline in the country, not import it.
