Highlights of this morning’s presidential press conference include: AMLO characterized as illegal the work stoppage by more than 55,000 employees of the judicial branch, who reject the administration’s Judicial Reform; Minister of the Interior Luisa María Alcalde presented a summary of what the Judicial Reform entails: a democratic method for the election of justices and judges, creation of a body to oversee judges’ performance, evaluation of judges’ performance, austerity and transparency in the judicial branch of government; the President called on the country’s five richest people to give their opinion on the call issued by business organizations –to which they belong- to violate the Constitution in the allocation of proportional representation seats in Congress; Minister of Security and Citizen Protection Rosa Icela Rodríguez reported that in July 2024, federal crimes were down 24.8% compared to December 2018. Intentional homicides decreased 18%, compared to July 2018.

Highlights of this morning’s presidential press conference include: AMLO criticized the Business Coordinating Council for calling for the Constitution to be violated in order to prevent Morena and its allies from having a 2/3 majority with the allocation of proportional representation seats. He charged that the real intention behind the opposition to the constitutionally authorized distribution of such seats is to prevent the approval of the Judicial Reform in order to continue with rampant corruption in the courts by having judges and justices at their service; the President said that the judicial branch employees who initiated an indefinite work stoppage to express their rejection of the Judicial Reform, are within their rights to do so. However, he reiterated that the proposal does not affect their labor rights and what it seeks to do is to eradicate the corruption that allows for the unjustified release of criminals; President López Obrador made public the letter he sent to his US counterpart Joe Biden to express his disagreement with Washington’s financing of Claudio X. González's opposition organization, Mexicans Against Corruption and Impunity.

Nevertheless, he emphasized that in any democracy, opposition parties are necessary; President López Obrador confirmed that yesterday a diplomatic note was delivered to the U.S. government asking Washington to explain the financing that its embassy has given to the organization Mexicans Against Corruption and Impunity, which has undertaken negative slander campaigns against the federal government.

Highlights of this morning’s presidential press conference include: 46 days before the end of his term in office, AMLO emphasized that his administration is finishing positively. There are no economic problems, poverty has been reduced, the popular economy has been strengthened, the peso has not been devalued, the minimum wage has been increased, record investment figures are being posted, priority projects are functioning, and the unemployment rate has dropped, among other indicators; López Obrador denied that there is pressure from the US Government for Mexico to take a position on the results of the Venezuelan presidential election and reiterated that his only desire is for the issue to be resolved peacefully, without violence; on August 19, during his morning press conference, President López Obrador will lead a tribute to Mexican nationals living in the United States. They are the representation of our country, of Mexico's greatness", the President said. The work of Mexican migrants generates US$324.8 billion, of which US$63.3 billion are sent back home in remittances, and US$265 billion are reinvested in the US economy.

Highlights of this morning’s presidential press conference include: AMLO will send a letter to his US counterpart, Joe Biden, to express his disagreement with Washington’s financing of Mexicans Against Corruption and Impunity, an association headed by opposition figure Claudio X. González, which is used to attack the federal government; the head of the Financial Intelligence Unit, Pablo Gómez, presented a report on the income of Mexicans Against Corruption and Impunity. Between 2016 and 2023 this civic association has received income of almost US$26.62 million, of which US$5.82 million came from US sources; the Mexican Government is considering reforms to the country’s fiscal laws to prevent tax deductible donations to organizations that carry out campaigns against the interests of the majority of the population. When there are deductions, these resources do not reach the Treasury, which in turn prevents them from being invested in the country’s development; in response to the warning from Federal Judiciary employees that they will go on strike to oppose the judicial reform, the President López Obrador said that they are within their rights to do so, however, he asked them to attend to the cases of tax debtors that have been put on the back burner and represent more than 35 billion pesos (US$1.85 billion), resources that can be used for the benefit of the people.

He charged that they are asking for the Constitution to be violated, but in the past they did not utter a word because the results favored them; President López Obrador reaffirmed his confidence in Sinaloa Governor Rubén Rocha following comments by drug trafficker Ismael "El Mayo" Zambada who declared that on the day of his capture he had a meeting scheduled with the state governor; the President asked the U.S. to clarify whether the State Department played a role in the transfer and detention of drug trafficker Ismael "El Mayo" Zambada in Texas; the President criticized the decision to release former Puebla governor Mario Marín this past Saturday, August 10. A judge changed the precautionary sentence from preventive imprisonment to house arrest, which favored the ex-governor who assisted in the 2006 electoral fraud and is accused of torturing journalist Lydia Cacho.

Highlights of this morning’s presidential press conference include: AMLO criticized the lack of cooperation from the US government to clarify how the arrest of drug traffickers Ismael "El Mayo" Zambada and Joaquín Guzmán López came about; 10 years after the Sonora River environmental disaster, caused by the spill of 40,000 cubic meters of acidified copper sulfate into the Sonora and Bacanuchi rivers, from a mine owned by Grupo Mexico, the company has not complied with the agreement to remedy, repair, and compensate the damages it caused. Grupo Mexico was supposed to cover an initial 2 billion pesos (US$106.21 million), but has only paid half of this amount, and has not satisfactorily complied with the environmental remediation plan. "It is very important that the file remains open; so that this is not swept under the rug," President López Obrador said; the President López Obrador reiterated that it is urgent and necessary to reform the Judicial Branch of government so that it represents the people and stops being at the beck and call of a privileged minority. "The courts must attend to everyone and always put the interests of the people and the nation first," he said.
