SUMMARY – MORNING PRESIDENTIAL PRESS CONFERENCE – MONDAY, OCTOBER 23, 2023

President Andrés Manuel López Obrador reported that he will share the proposals from the meeting with leaders of countries with the largest number of migrants with his U.S. counterpart Joe Biden. The meeting was held this past weekend in Chiapas. The President indicated that dialogue between the United States and Cuba will be promoted, since “blockading a country is a flagrant violation of human rights.”

Regarding yesterday’s demonstrations in favor of maintaining judicial branch trusts, the President indicated that there was complete freedom of expression, although he does not agree that privileges should be defended. He revealed that the retired Supreme Court Justice José Ramón Cossío has a monthly pension of 480,000 pesos (US$26,506), compared to the 62,000 pesos per month (US$3,423) that a former government official can receive.

The President reiterated that the 15 Billion pesos (US$820 million) from the 13 judiciary trusts will be used to benefit 2 million children from low-income families, through scholarships. He charged that the justices do not respect article 127 of the Constitution, which states that no one can earn more than the president.

President López Obrador presented statistical data showing the progress of the Mexican economy. He pointed out that the country’s economy has been growing more than of the United States for three consecutive years.

The Chief Executive charged that the brothers-in-law of former President Carlos Salinas de Gortari are involved in concessions in the health sector whose profits range between 2 and 3 million pesos per year (US$110,000 y US$160,000). He also said that the Gerard brothers had contracts in the Texcoco airport.

It was reported that the construction of a cargo transport terminal is projected in section 7 of the Maya Train. In addition, construction of a maintenance base and a cargo transportation operations yard in Campeche has already begun. Construction of the Puerta al Mar tourist attraction and the “Yum Kaax” Import Market is also already underway.
