Highlights of this morning’s presidential press conference include: ahead of the June 2 national elections, AMLO expressed confidence that a free election is guaranteed, in which the people will decide and will confirm that there is now an authentic democracy in Mexico, unlike in the past when it was only a simulation; Chiapas Governor Rutilio Escandón reported that, according to the National Council for the Evaluation of Social Development Policies (Coneval), poverty in the state decreased 10.63%, with respect to 2018; President López Obrador will meet today with his Guatemalan counterpart, Bernardo Arévalo, to discuss binational cooperation, security, culture, regional issues. “We are going to discuss projects that we are going to initiate and I am sure that there will be continuity” during the next administration, the President said. He expressed confidence that the Sembrando Vida agricultural support program will continue to operate in Guatemala.

He said that the media’s attempts at manipulating public opinion “don’t make a dent.” The head of the Federal Electricity Commission (CFE), Manuel Bartlett, indicated that the National Electric System has never been at risk, had never stopped functioning and that there is no deficit in the production of electric energy. The Mexican Government has invested almost US$20 billion dollars in electric power generation and transmission projects to strengthen the CFE.; the atypical demand for electricity between May 7 and 9, due to the heat wave, caused the rotating interruption of electricity supply to at most 5% of the population; National Energy Control Center (Cenace) Director Ricardo Octavio Mota explained that the Cenace is responsible for guaranteeing the supply of electric power. Therefore, when there is an atypical demand for energy, consumption is restricted in an orderly and controlled manner to avoid a major problem in the entire National System.

Highlights of this morning’s presidential press conference include: AMLO announced that federal basic education teachers will receive an annual salary increase of 10%, so that their monthly wage will be US$1,055; the President charged that Mexican and Spanish right-wing forces seek to undermine his government and the Fourth Transformation movement, using the Spanish parliament as a platform to intervene in the June elections; Foreign Direct Investment topped US$20.31 billion in the first quarter of 2024, a record high; on May 16, at the morning presidential press conference, the Mexican Government will present the plan to rescue the Federal Electricity Commission (CFE) and will explain the role of the National Energy Control Center.
