SUMMARY – MORNING PRESIDENTIAL PRESS CONFERENCE – WEDNESDAY, JULY 31, 2024

Highlights of this morning’s press conference include: Following comments by the head of the National Electoral Institute, Guadalupe Taddei, that the election of judges and justices proposed by the Judicial Reform would require a budget similar to that of the presidential election, about $510 million, AMLO proposed that the judicial branch contribute half of the resources of the funds it has in trusts, more than US$1.07 billion; the President emphasized that there are enough public resources for Claudia Sheinbaum's administration to carry out its project, US$2.15 billion for social programs and priority projects during the first quarter of 2025; the Mexican Government’s fiscal policy is underpinned by four pillars of the Transformation project: support for family income, bolstering of specific items on the supply end, regional development, and strengthening public finances.

Highlights of this morning’s presidential press conference include: AMLO said that the Judicial Reform at the federal level should be replicated at the state level so that citizens elect judges and justices, since in many cases governors impose them; after the meeting he had with the parents of the 43 missing Ayotzinapa students, President López Obrador reported that it was a positive meeting that will be repeated on August 27 when additional information on the investigation of the case will be provided; the President confirmed that the US government was in talks with Joaquín Guzmán López, son of drug trafficker Joaquín “El Chapo” Guzmán, for his possible surrender. However, he reiterated that the information provided by Washington on the arrest of the two Mexican drug kingpins has been limited, so there are still many questions to be resolved; AMLO reiterated that Mexico will wait for the results of the vote count in Venezuela before congratulating the winner of the presidential election. He said that if there are doubts about the results, a recount of votes should be undertaken to make the election transparent. The President criticized the interference of the OAS and the propaganda of foreign governments against the democratic process in Venezuela.

MORNING PRESIDENTIAL PRESS CONFERENCE – MONDAY, JULY 29, 2024

Highlights of this morning’s presidential press conference include: AMLO announced that as of next Saturday, the Dos Bocas refinery in Tabasco will begin producing gasoline, with output expected reach between 250,000 and 260,000 barrels per day; the President said the report sent by the US State Department regarding the flight that transported Ismael “El Mayo” Zambada and Joaquín Guzmán López to Texas, which indicates that no US agency was involved in the transportation of these drug lords, is insufficient. He added that if there is no more information on the case, he would communicate with Joe Biden to clarify the issue; according to the National Statistics Institute, the perception of insecurity in Mexico dropped to 59.4% in June 2024, eight points less than in June 2022; the Mexican Government will not take a position on the Venezuelan presidential elections results until the process is concluded by the competent authorities, the President said.

Highlights of this morning’s presidential press conference include: AMLO welcomed the announcement that president-elect Claudia Sheinbaum has ratified Zoé Robledo as head of the Mexican Social Security Institute (IMSS). His ratification means guaranteeing the continuity of the IMSS Bienestar program, which is the most important strategy to guarantee the population’s right to health-care; Minister of Security and Citizen Protection Rosa Icela Rodríguez said that on Thursday, the US embassy in Mexico reported and confirmed the arrests inside the United States of Ismael “El Mayo” Zambada and Joaquín Guzmán López, leaders of the Sinaloa drug cartel. Initial reports indicate that both drug lords left Mexico on an irregular civilian flight. Investigations into the case are progressing and Mexican officials are awaiting information from the U.S. government. The President said that without detracting from the arrests, it is necessary to think about resolving the problem of drug consumption, addressing its causes; the Sembrando Vida agricultural support program benefits 442,685 recipients in 24 states, 43% of whom are indigenous peoples and Afro-Mexicans.

Highlights of this morning’s presidential press conference include: AMLO emphasized that previous administrations guided their policies based on recommendations from international financial organizations, but for the first time in 40 years the government has a development plan of its own in which the agenda involves the fight against corruption and for justice, austerity, and putting an end to privatizations; President Lopez Obrador exposed the national leader of the PAN, Marko Cortes, who declared that his party should not have backed the government’s social programs during the electoral campaign; the President recalled that the Federal Electricity Commission (CFE) was in danger of being privatized if the neoliberal governments had continued in office. Rescuing the CFE has generated savings of close to US$21.78 billion. During the current administration, over US$19.99 billion have been invested for electric power generation projects and the transmission and distribution of electric power, enabling the price of electricity to remain unchanged for Mexicans

Highlights of this morning’s morning press conference include: AMLO criticized the opposition’s attempts to interpret the Constitution when it suits them, in order to prevent the transformation movement from having a qualified majority in the Chamber of Deputies. He explained that one of their goals is to prevent the Judicial Reform from being achieved, because they want to maintain a corrupt branch of government at the service of a minority; Interior Minister Luisa María Alcalde reiterated that the Constitution is very clear about the distribution of proportional representation seats in the Chamber of Deputies, and establishes criteria and maximum ceilings for the distribution of seats per party, not per electoral coalition; the President charged that Tesla's decision to wait for the results of the U.S. election before investing in the Nuevo León car plant is a strategy of financial speculation; the Mexican Government has invested US$19.99 billion dollars in the Federal Electricity Commission in six years for energy generation, transmission, and distribution projects

Highlights of this morning’s presidential press conference include: AMLO reiterated that there is no economic risk in the upcoming transition to the new administration, as the country's public finances are strong. He highlighted some of the achievements obtained thanks to the policy of Mexican Humanism, including: reduction of poverty, such as has not occurred in 30 years, decrease in inequality, increase of the minimum wage, such as has not occurred in 40 years, strengthening of the peso, unprecedented job creation, increased Banco de México foreign reserves, record foreign direct investment numbers; the President charged that from 2018 to 2024, judges have favored at least 192 highly dangerous criminals, who have been released on Fridays and Sundays. This modus operandi occurs because weekends are when it is more difficult to check if those released have other outstanding investigations surrounding their cases.
