SUMMARY – MORNING PRESIDENTIAL PRESS CONFERENCE – WEDNESDAY, SEPTEMBER 18, 2024

Highlights of this morning’s presidential press conference include: AMLO denounced Ernesto Zedillo, who left his circle of intellectuals and abandoned his activism on the international stage to criticize the Judicial Reform here in Mexico, arguing that the former president “has no moral authority to talk about democracy.”; after Felipe Calderón's former Minister of Public Security, Genaro García Luna, published a letter accusing President López Obrador of links with drug trafficking, the Mexican President responded, declaring that if the ex-official imprisoned in the United States has proof, videos, or phone calls, he should make them public; the President denounced a sensationalist campaign over violence in Sinaloa promoted by opponents of the government aimed at inducing fear in the population; it is not true that the peso would be devalued if the Judicial Reform were approved. The peso continues to be the most appreciated currencies in relation to the dollar worldwide. López Obrador's government will be the first in 50 years not to devalue the peso.

Highlights of this morning’s presidential press conference include: AMLO described as “laughable” the statements made by former president Ernesto Zedillo, who said yesterday that the Judicial Reform buries democracy; in response to possible legal challenges against the Judicial Reform, President López Obrador explained that there is no legal basis to prevent the reform and that not even the Supreme Court could stop it; the Mexican government is addressing the situation of violence in Sinaloa on two levels: protecting the population and preventing confrontations between criminal groups; actions in security matters during López Obrador's administration include: attention to the causes of public insecurity with social programs; weapons exchange programs; the creation of the National Guard; apprehension of 94,240 lawbreakers, of whom 8,509 were priority targets: seizure of chemical substances and drugs and destruction of 2,593 clandestine laboratories.

Highlights of this morning’s presidential press conference include: AMLO charged that the opposition, using lies, has tried to sow fear with arguments of a peso devaluation and capital flight if the Judicial Reform was approved; President López Obrador said that the violence in Sinaloa is being responded to with the mobilization of the Armed Forces to protect the population and avoid confrontations. He clarified that there is no escalation of a cartel war in Culiacán, so he called on people to not be alarmed; the President indicated that the Ministry of National Defense is building five hospitals in Puebla, Guerrero, Oaxaca, and Yucatán, which will be inaugurated in December by Claudia Sheinbaum. Six hospitals built by the Institute for Social Security and Services for State Workers (ISSSTE) will also remain to be inaugurated; the Ministry of Well-Being will propose to President-elect Claudia Sheinbaum that the pension/stipend for senior citizens living abroad be provided outside of Mexico, given that currently, due to operating rules, it can only be paid within the country.

Highlights of this morning’s presidential press conference include: AMLO hailed the approval of the Judicial Reform by the full session of the Senate; the President made it clear that there were no negotiations for PAN senator Miguel Ángel Yunes Márquez to vote in favor of the reform; following the debate between the US presidential candidates, AMLO acknowledged that both treated Mexico with respect in their interventions; it is not true that Mexico charges taxes to tourists to enter the country with personal computers or electronic devices; it is false that there was a gasolinazo, a hike in gasoline prices, from September 9 to 13.

Highlights of this morning’s presidential press conference include: Within the framework of the discussion of the Judicial Reform in the Senate plenary session, President Andrés Manuel López Obrador reiterated that it is urgent to put an end to corruption in that branch of government, via the popular election of judges, justices, and magistrates. He pointed out that those who oppose the reform are the same ones who refuse to lose their privileges, since the judicial branch is at the service of the rich and powerful and white-collar crime; Minister of the Interior Luisa Alcalde exposed the nepotism in the federal judicial branch of government (PJF), with half of the personnel having at least one relative working in the PJF and 85.4% of the magistrates and 67% of the judges having relatives on the PJF payroll; the federal government denounced more than 20 judges and magistrates who have freed alleged criminals on weekends, denied arrest warrants requested by the Federal Attorney General's Office, or delayed justice by not handing down sentences.

Highlights of this morning’s presidential press conference include: AMLO pointed out that while reforms have been introduced in the executive and legislative branches, corruption still prevails in the judicial branch. This is why it is urgent to clean it up for the benefit of all; President López Obrador criticized and denounced National Action Party senator María de Jesús Díaz Marmolejo, who called for those who vote in favor of the Judicial Reform to be lynched; the President reported that his son Andrés will participate in Morena because he wants to help consolidate the transformation movement; AMLO congratulated the Mexican athletes who participated in the Paris 2024 Paralympic Games, and who won 3 gold, 6 silver and 8 bronze medals. On September 17, the Mexican Government will deliver financial support to the medal winners.
