President Andrés Manuel López Obrador criticized the opposition’s attempts to interpret the Constitution when it suits them, in order to prevent the transformation movement from having a qualified majority in the Chamber of Deputies. He explained that one of their goals is to prevent the Judicial Reform from being achieved, because they want to maintain a corrupt branch of government at the service of a minority.
Interior Minister Luisa María Alcalde reiterated that the Constitution is very clear about the distribution of proportional representation seats in the Chamber of Deputies, and establishes criteria and maximum ceilings for the distribution of seats per party, not per electoral coalition. Since 2008, the distribution of proportional representation seats has been allocated by party, as established by the Constitution. Based on this criterion, Morena is entitled to 248 seats; PT, 50; PVEM, 75; PAN, 68; PRI, 33; PRD 1; Citizens’ Movement, 24; and one seat for an independent congressional deputy.
President López Obrador said Tesla’s decision to wait for the results of the U.S. election before investing in the Nuevo León car plant is a strategy of financial speculation, which puts a priority on how they do in the stock markets and leaves production and jobs on the back burner. “It is an evil that we are seeing nowadays worldwide because this does not provide a solid footing for nations’ progress,” he explained.
The Minister of Labor and Social Welfare reported that the 510,280 beneficiaries of the Youth Building the Future program will receive their next payment on July 26. In 2024 the budget for this strategy is over 24.20 billion pesos (US$1.31 billion).
