SUMMARY – MORNING PRESIDENTIAL PRESS CONFERENCE – WEDNESDAY – JULY 17, 2024

President Andrés Manuel López Obrador responded to those who question the results of the June 2 elections with an article by economist Gerardo Esquive, who wrote that “while in 12 years of opposition coalition governments, the number of poor people rose at a rate of 100,000 per month, in the first four years of this administration, poverty declined by 100,000 people per month. After knowing this, do you still find the election results illogical or hard to explain? Will you continue to denounce the voters for their decision?”

The President explained that the debate on overrepresentation in Congress is due to the opposition’s rejection of judges being at the service of the people. “They want judges and justices to be at the service of a minority, both organized and white-collar crime,” he said.

The head of the Ministry of the Interior, Luisa María Alcalde, explained that the results of the June 2 elections determine that the Morena-PT-PVEM coalition is entitled to 373 seats in the Chamber of Deputies, which means a qualified majority that will allow it to make changes to the Constitution. The allocation of proportional representation seats is by party, in order to avoid over-representation. The criteria established in the Constitution is that no political party may have more than 300 deputies, or the maximum limit will be the total percentage vote received plus eight points. The limitations on coalitions were eliminated by the PAN, PRI, and PVEM in 2008.

Despite the numerous attempts at disinformation, President López Obrador highlighted that the people of Mexico have demonstrated that there is no media power that can place itself above the will of the people.

In the Who’s Who in Lies segment it was reported that:

-It is not true that there was a 123% increase in fuel theft in the first five years of López Obrador’s administration, compared to the same period of Peña Nieto’s government. What is known as huachicol has decreased 94.2% since 2019, which means savings of more than 337 billion pesos (US$19 billion).
