SUMMARY – MORNING PRESIDENTIAL PRESS CONFERENCE – THURSDAY, MAY 23, 2024

President Andrés Manuel López Obrador sent his condolences to the families of the nine people who were killed yesterday, during an accident that occurred during a Citizens’ Movement election campaign rally held in Nuevo León. He indicated that since incident took place, the Ministry of National Defense (Sedena), Civil Protection, and the Mexican Social Security Institute (IMSS) have been collaborating in attending to the injured.

Following the International Court of Justice decision that it will not take precautionary measures against Ecuador for its raid on the Mexican Embassy in Quito, President López Obrador said that the case is still not over. “It is important to set a precedent so that international law is never again violated and an embassy invaded, which violates a country’s sovereignty,” he explained.

President Lopez Obrador denounced the intellectuals who support the opposition presidential candidate, since in the words of historian Hector Aguilar Camin, it was said that they wished for the return of the era of “perks” for the cultural community, that is, the time when they received economic benefits from the neoliberal governments.

The Mexican Government will not expropriate the Vulcan Materials extraction plant in Playa del Carmen. The intention has always been to purchase the terrain in order to convert part of the rain forest into an ecological reserve and thus counteract the ecocide caused by the company.

The President reiterated the need for a Judicial Branch Reform in order to move forward with the transformation of the country. “They took everything, they held the institutions hostage, they put them at the service of private interests and (for them), the people did not exist,” said the President speaking about the power of the privileged minorities.
