SUMMARY – MORNING PRESIDENTIAL PRESS CONFERENCE – FRIDAY, AUGUST 16, 2024

The President criticized the political promiscuity of the PRI and the PAN, who betrayed their principles and put together an alliance for electoral purposes. Nevertheless, he emphasized that in any democracy, opposition is necessary. “Democracy is so that no one, at any level, feels they have absolute power. Democracy is competition, it is confrontation of ideas, of projects, it is plurality, it is the opposite of dictatorship, so it is necessary to have strong opposition parties with principles,” he stressed.

President López Obrador confirmed that yesterday a diplomatic note was delivered to the U.S. government asking Washington to explain the financing that its embassy has given to the organization Mexicans Against Corruption and Impunity, which has undertaken negative slander campaigns against the federal government.

The President said that it was correct for the Attorney General’s Office to take over the investigation of the killing of Héctor Melesio Cuén, former rector of the University of Sinaloa, given that many contradictions have arisen regarding his murder. “We want a thorough, serious investigation to be carried out and that everything be divulged,” he said.

President López Obrador insisted that the case of the Chihuahua Prosecutor’s Office against Javier Corral is a matter of political retaliation, given that Corral denounced former governor César Duarte for corruption, after showing that he used public funds for PRI election campaigns. “It is a completely political matter,” he explained.
